September Blend of Things

Kenshokin Increase In September - Have you ever wondered what those envelopes that sumo wrestlers receive after winning a match are? Well, those envelopes are kenshokin (懸賞金). They are cash prizes offered by sponsors for sumo matches. Each envelope, which previously contained 62,000 yen (US$565.75), has now been increased to 70,000 yen (US$638.82). This money is an additional prize beyond the regular salary that wrestlers receive, and not all matches include kenshokin. Only bouts between high-ranking wrestlers (such as yokozuna or ozeki) or matches particularly important to sponsors receive these offers. Additionally, only part of the money goes directly to the wrestler, while a percentage is withheld and placed in a fund that will be distributed only upon their retirement from sumo. The kensho (the ritual of handing over the envelopes) is an important part of the sumo ceremony. It represents not only a recognition of the wrestler's talent but also the respect and honor associated with sumo as a traditional Japanese sport.
